New Audi A5 Avant e-hybrid confirmed for New Zealand; combines performance, efficiency, and long electric range

Audi confirms it will offer the Avant as an e-hybrid S line with up to 220 kW, increased efficiency and power due to HV battery with more capacity, higher energy density, and smart recuperation strategy.

Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the new Audi A5 range is welcoming an additional member to its family. Alongside the pure combustion engine S5 Avant launched this week, Audi will also offer a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model for the first time. The new generation of HV batteries boasts around 45 percent higher capacity and increased regenerative braking performance contributes to an electric range of up to 101 kilometers* (WLTP).

Greg Leet, General Manager of Audi New Zealand says this is an exciting extension of our plug-in hybrid range.

“Just days after welcoming the all-new Audi S5 Avant to our shores we are excited to share we are extending our A5 offering to incorporate the highly anticipated PHEV to the lineup. Not only is this a first for the Audi A5 family with its athletic design and completely new interior, it is also an Avant station wagon offering the practicality we know Kiwis will love. The Avant has always been a fan favorite here, and now combined with hybrid technology, we think New Zealander’s will respond well."

With the new A5 family, Audi has embarked on the next chapter in its successful history of mid-size cars with a more striking design language, state-of-the-art combustion engine technology, and a new operating concept. To make the new PHEVs even more recognizable, Audi is introducing the new plug-in hybrid model as “e-hybrid” with immediate effect.

The new Audi A5 Avant e-hybrid will be powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine with an output of 220 kW and an electric motor that delivers up to 105 kW. The 220 kW can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h. Coupled with quattro ultra technology and S sport suspension.

The heart of the new A5 Avant e-hybrid is the new high-voltage battery at the rear of the vehicle. Maximum AC charging power has been upped to 11 kW. This increase in power reduces the charging time from 0 to 100 percent to just 2.5 hours.

Audi has also significantly increased the regenerative braking performance, and drivers can now adjust the degree of thrust recuperation in EV mode using paddles on the steering wheel. The new A5 Avant e-hybrid essentially runs on electric power for as long as possible to fully utilize the available battery charge to the driver’s destination. When this function is activated, the vehicle recovers energy automatically. This is based on route data stored in the navigation system. The new A5 Avant e-hybrid quattro can also recover energy automatically without active route guidance.

The hybrid management of the new model is designed for efficiency, flexibility, and maximum customer comfort and automatically selects the optimal operating strategy. Two operating modes are available: “EV” and “hybrid.” In EV mode, the PHEV models run exclusively on electric power. When driving in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level as needed in order to save enough electrical energy for later use. In addition to the automatic hybrid mode, the desired charge level can now be individually selected for the first time using a digital slider.

Extensive standard equipment

Like the Audi S5 Avant, the PHEV model comes with a high level of standard equipment. The sporty A5 Avant e-hybrid will come as a standard S line, offering a more premium exterior and interior, Matrix LED Headlights, and privacy glass – making for a particularly dynamic appearance. It also includes progressive steering, navigation, the MMI panoramic display, and an inductive phone charging pad. Beyond that, the models come standard with 3-zone automatic air conditioning, and 19-inch black gloss turned finish wheels.

The New Zealand launch is planned for quarter three of 2025 with a starting price of $117,990^ excluding on road costs.  To receive updates on this exciting new range, please follow the link to register your interest.
