The all-new Audi S5 Avant is the first model of the new A5 range to be launched in New Zealand. Built on the new PPC, it will offer an all-new design, technology, and more efficient performance.

Greg Leet, General Manager of Audi New Zealand explains that the S5 Avant is an important model for Audi NZ as our station wagons, such as the predecessor S4 Avant, have typically led the B segment.

“We are excited to bring this all-new spirited Avant to the NZ market. Built on the new PPC platform, Audi has been able to completely redefine this popular wagon. We are confident that this model will set a new standard in the premium B segment, offering unparalleled performance and technology in the shape of the Kiwi’s much-loved wagon.”

Pricing and performance

This 3.0-litre V6 TFSI quattro model delivers a system output of 270 kW and a top speed of 250 km/h. The S5 Avant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. It has a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and MHEV plus technology for the first time. The revised S tronic dual-clutch transmission in the Audi S5, designed for more torque, also reduces the weight on the front axle and improves agility. Partial electrification by means of the new 48-volt MHEV plus system leads to reduced CO2 emissions via electrified driving components and high recuperation performance.

An all-new design

The completely redesigned A5 family will offer a powerful and clean new design. From modified proportions with a long wheelbase, large wheels and a low, sporty body embody progressive dynamism and premium standards. In the Avant, the dynamic, taut roofline merges into a seamlessly integrated roof spoiler that spans the sporty, flat rear window. The D-pillars, which are steeply raked, emphasise the dynamic side view of the S5 Avant

As an S model, this vehicle leads with a sporty exterior including 20” Audi Sport 5-twin-spoke black metallic, gloss-turned finished wheels, privacy glass, Matrix LED headlights and Digital OLED rear lights with dynamic indicators and customisable daytime running light signatures.

On the inside, customers will be impressed with an all-new design. Like the recently launched all-new Q6 e-tron, the S5 Avant will offer a new digital stage complete with premium, soft fabrics extending across the entire cockpit to each of the front doors, creating a homely ambiance. The curved, free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display with OLED technology takes centre stage alongside a standard MMI front passenger display, which is perfectly integrated into the dashboard design. The new S5 has a configurable head-up display that has been further developed compared to its predecessor. For the first time, drivers now have the option of controlling vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display.

Optional upgrades include, but are not limited to, Audi’s new Panoramic Glass Sunroof with switchable transparency, Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with head restraint loudspeakers, and a black exterior package.

New MHEV plus technology creates increased efficiency

The new MHEV plus system is based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system that supports the combustion engine and reduces CO2 emissions while increasing performance. The powertrain generator (PTG) enables partially electric driving that contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.

The new MHEV plus system enables significant advantages in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in the Audi S5 Avant. These total up to 17 g/km or 0.74 l/100 km in the V6 3.0 TFSI (in the WLTP driving cycle).

The PTG can also add up to 18 kW of electric power to the output of the combustion engine. When decelerating, the PTG feeds energy back into the battery (recuperation) at up to 25 kW. As a result, purely electric manoeuvring and parking are possible to a limited extent. Thanks to the option of using an electric air conditioning compressor, the air conditioning system can also be operated when the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights and the combustion engine is switched off.

With the integrated and blending-capable brake control system (iBRS), the brake pedal and the brake hydraulics can be completely decoupled. In the S5 Avant, the MHEV plus system achieves the necessary deceleration without using the friction brakes thanks to regenerative braking. This means that deceleration is initially achieved solely by recuperation. The friction brakes only kick in when the brake pedal is pressed harder. The brake feel remains unaffected by this.
